Estrella Foothills High School is celebrating a significant victory after the school's street name was finally changed from Rustler Road to Wolfpack Way. The change comes after months of effort from the school's 2021-2022 Senior Student Council, who pushed for the renaming to help the school embrace its identity as one pack of wolves.
Last year, the Senior Student Council at Estrella Foothills High School appealed to the Goodyear City Council, requesting a change in the school's street name. Led by Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Edwards, the council argued that the name Rustler Road did not align with the school's mascot, which is a wolf. Instead, they proposed the name Wolfpack Way as a more fitting option.
"Just the fact that they initiated the process and did it with us tailing along – I think it just shows some initiative and I think we have some great kids coming up," said Kimberly Heinz, Principal of Estrella Foothills High School.
It was unanimous approval from the Goodyear City Council; however, city engineers had to approve it as well, which took over eight months. After working out the details, the street name was officially changed, and the event was celebrated with a ceremony in March. Students, staff, and community members came together to commemorate the momentous occasion and show their pride in the school and its new identity.
The ceremony was filled with excitement and positivity, with a speech from Mayor Joe Pizzillo.
“This is a perfect example of what happens when you get out there, and come before city government, and do your request … and the results are here,” said Mayor Pizzilo.
The street name change is not only a symbolic victory for Estrella Foothills High School, but it also provides practical benefits for students, staff, and visitors to the campus. The new name, Wolfpack Way, is easier to navigate and more descriptive of the school's location.
Overall, the name change has been a major success for Estrella Foothills High School. It represents a significant step towards the school's continued growth and development as a thriving educational institution.
