Throughout history, Americans have celebrated Thanksgiving as a tradition. What is there to not love about it? With family, friends, and the greatest meals on the dinner table, there’s a lot to look forward to after the “Halloween hype.” Merged between the scariest and jolliest times of the year, Thanksgiving should receive more recognition for the love that it brings communities across the country!

The Wolfpack Post wanted to hear why the EFHS community loves the holiday as much as we do. In the past week, a form was sent out to EFHS staff and students to hear about their favorite meals and why they cherish them so much. With over 60 responses to sort from, we wanted to highlight some of our favorite responses and the meals that the community thinks you should add to your dinner table.

The Entrée

The most popular dish that the community suggested was turkey. One person mentions that it “makes me feel at home,” and another EFHS student adds that their father “brines it for a couple of days, and then smokes it on the grill all day.”

However, if you’re looking for a more lean cut of meat, one student suggests making salmon.

“It is good for you, easy to cook so you can spend more time with family and not all day in the kitchen,” they wrote.

Other students added that they make entrées that connects with their culture. Multiple students suggest frybread, pozole, or tamales, adding that they’re a “family tradition to eat them on the holidays.”

Regardless of your choice of the main dish for Thanksgiving, the most important thing is that it gets you excited and ready for the feast.

The Sides

Many people suggest that the best part of Thanksgiving was the sides! The participants suggested a wide variety of foods as their favorites. The community's favorite side dish is stuffing; one person added that “it’s delicious when made correctly and pairs perfectly with literally any other dish on the table, making it the ultimate wingman side dish.”

Another popular answer is Mashed Potatoes and Gravy. One person suggested they loved the meal because of “how nostalgic it is and how much it reminds me of thanksgiving and being with my family.”

Some of our honorable mentions for most-loved thanksgiving sides were mac & cheese, green bean casserole, and sweet potato casserole. One person is very passionate about their casserole, suggesting that “it’s GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD.  Plus, my mom makes the best kind.”

Everyone’s Favorite: Dessert

The majority of the answers didn’t suggest the Thanksgiving sides or entrées, but rather, the dessert. Regardless of how good the main dishes were, a dessert is a final touch that can make or break a good Thanksgiving.

The answer that makes us most jealous is “grandma’s chocolate creme pie.” Their reasoning for this meal is, “It’s such a staple for Thanksgiving in our family, and it’s just so, so good. It also reminds me that Christmas starts the next day!”

Another loved answer is pumpkin pie cheesecake. This person wrote that “I love the taste of pumpkin spice in general and cheesecake is my favorite dessert.  I put them together in a graham cracker crust and enjoy the fluffy goodness.  It is now the most requested Thanksgiving dessert I make!”

Aside from entrées, sides and dessert, our favorite answer from the form is bacon. For their reasoning, this person said, “it’s bacon.” It’s hard to argue with that.

Whether your family celebrates Thanksgiving or not, the Wolfpack Post hopes you enjoy the extra-long weekend and encourages you to splurge on your diet. With meals like the ones people suggested on the form, it seems like the community is ready for a fantastic holiday season.
