Girls’ volleyball had a phenomenal season going 32-1 overall and 10-0 in sectionals. This led the girls into wining the state championship against Arcadia 3-1! When asking Raegan Moran, a senior team captain, on how they made it possible to break records, she stated, “We were able to make it to state by changing our mindset. At the beginning of the year, we all knew we were going to win state. We all put our goals on a piece of paper and we hung it up in our locker room. We looked at it every single day, every single practice, every single game. We truly had confidence in each other and that’s what took us to state.” The volleyball team had pure dedication and worked hard to achieve their goals. After asking Moran what advice she would give to the other seasons moving forward she said, “You can’t let losses get in the way of succeeding in the end. If you work hard enough those loses aren’t going to affect you in the end. What you put into it is what you’re going to get out of it.”
Moran gives inspirational advice for those in winter and spring sports. So far, have the winter season sports taken some of her advice? It looks like it! All of our winter athletes are going into playoffs, sectionals, or state!
Girls Basketball is having a great season going 14-4 overall and 7-3 in their section. Their current standings are placed at number eleven in their division, which means they are in the playoffs! Today, the girls will be hosting at 7 p.m. AZ College Prep. AZ College Prep standings are number twenty-two. So, make sure you go out and support the girls. Some players to look out for are Sophomore Eva Amenhauser and Junior Madison Pond. Amenhauser is a center with outstanding stats. Her points per game (PPG) is 9.0, her rebounds per game (RPG) is 12.3, and her assists per game (APG) is 3.2. Pond, a shooting guard, PPG is 12.7, RPG is 6.1, and APG is 2.3. The upcoming game should be an amazing game for the wolves. The Lady Wolves have a 77%-winning percentage this year, while AZ College Prep only has a 55%-winning percentage this year.
Boys Basketball has also made it to playoffs going 8-10 overall and 4-6 in sectionals. Their current standings are number four. You can support the boys on Friday at 7 p.m. where Dysart High School is hosting. Players to look out for are Cam Houser and Keith (Josh) Kabega. Houser has an outstanding PPG that is 17.5, an RPG of 6.1, and APG being 2.5. Kabega has a PPG of 7.5, RPG of 5.7, and an APG of 3.9. Their game versus Dysart will be an interesting game to watch with Dysart standings being at number 1 in their section. If we win this upcoming game, we will be able to move on to the next round.
Not only are our boys’ and girls’ basketball doing great, but so is our unified sports. Unified sports are going to state on Friday, February 17th.
Girls Soccer is kicking it out on the field this year, as well. Overall, the girls are 10-2 and going undefeated in our section making them 5-0. They just recently made history with beating Prescott for the first time. While you are supporting our girls basketball team you can also peak your head out and watch our girls soccer game on Thursday, as well. The game will start at 6 p.m. against Greenway. The players to be look out for are Cassidy Sims and Jami O’Brien. Sims, a senior midfielder, with a total of 19 goals and 10 assists for 48 points. While O’Brien, a senior middle fielder, has 18 goals, 10 assists and 46 points. Come out and support the girls while they are almost on their way through state.
Boys Soccer has also been doing a great job on the field. They have 7 wins, 4 loses and 1 tie overall and went 2-3 in the section. They are another one of our winter sports going into the playoffs! Their next game is today at 6 p.m. The game will be hosted by Douglas High School.
Let’s not forget about wrestling! Congratulations to Sharmia Evans, the section runner up who is now going to state! Come out to support the boys at their sectionals this Saturday at 11 a.m. at Peoria High School. Show your support for state that will be on February 16-18 starting at 5 p.m. Be on the lookout for some good matches. There will be a returning Sophomore that is a state qualifier from last year, which is Che Ramirez. Ramirez currently has an outstanding 24 wins and only 9 losses. Other key Sophomores to be on the look-out for are Aidan Arvin and Cody Schexnyder. Make sure to come out and support our seniors Colton Uhls, Conner Balak, Porter Gasvoda, and Edgar Roberts. The head coach, Garth Benson, stated “What we talked about all year is focus, fight, and finish. If they can focus on their technique, fight through the match, and finish their moves they should qualify for state.”
